Rouxville to Fouriesburg – a western Maloti Mountains route

The road trip from Rouxville to Fouriesburg exposes you to some of the best visual and historic elements of the eastern Free State, from driving around its vast sandstone cliffs, to visiting its cherry harvests, and to the nostalgic experience of riding in an old steam locomotive.

 

 

 

 

The mountain above Zastron is home to the only Cape vulture colony in the Free State.

It’s basically at Rouxville that a person begins to notice the star attraction of this 300km journey to the eastern Free State town of Fouriesburg: the jagged sandstone cliffs of the Moloti (also spelt Maluti) Mountains in the distance.
Over the next couple of days, as we slowly meander up the western flank of Lesotho, along its borderline, we see the Malotis in many hues of light. At dawn and at sunset the rich sun glints off the sandstone buttresses, turning them into mammoth gold structures. Hunting raptors sweep over their heights and villages cluster at their foothills.
We drive north-east to Zastron, where the ancient San left their mark in exquisite rock art in the many sandstone caves of the area. Legend has it that plains game once ruled the grasslands of this district, and that the first Boer farming family to settle here befriended the local Basotho. They shared a love of peaches, and the farmers used to store peach pips in their pockets and then plant them later as they moved over the land.

We have four different fields each providing a different playing experience:
The SWAT HOUSE is a maze of rooms and passages designed to simulate close quarter combat. It is an intense, adrenaline packed, and sometimes painful experience, not for the fainthearted!
The TIRE FIELD is a technical, fast paced, speedball type field, where the action is fast and furious. One of our most popular fields!
Our BUSH FIELD is there for those who prefer a slower, stalking style of play. Sniping and “Leopard Crawling” is the order of the day in this field.
The biggest field is the TOURNAMENT FIELD where we regularly host The various league competitions. The size and design of the field tests teamwork and tactics to the utmost!

Diving with Seven Gill Cowsharks (Cape Town)

The Seven Gill Cowshark, or Spotted Cowshark, is a prehistoric apex predator which we have been fortunate enough to see regularly enough at one location to be able to confidently guide dives there with an 85% chance of success. The Cowshark is a social feeder and can be observed in large groups of up to 18 individuals. We have seen females attain three metres in length while males are slightly smaller. Distinctive features include their seven gill slits and the absence of the front dorsal fin.

We position the boat in a channel approximately 12m deep where we descend on to a sandy bottom and wait for the Cowsharks to approach us. They swim slowly up and down the channel, which runs roughly north/south and they pass at arms length from the divers as we kneel on the sandy bottom to observe them. It’s a great opportunity for underwater photographers and by the end of the dive, you will recognise the individuals by distinctive bites, scrapes or colouration.

It is quite common to see Spotted Gully sharks in the water at the same time – they have a large dorsal fin and completely different swimming pattern to the Cowsharks, so one can’t confuse the two species. The Gully’s are more “frisky” in comparison to the more lazy Cowshark style of movement and are much more timid. They can be readily observed in the really dense kelp beds and are best seen while freediving. The Gully shark attains a maximum size of around 1.7m.

In addition to Scuba diving, there are many other activities in the area, including snorkeling, boat trips, deep sea fishing, surfing, paddling, kite boarding and many nature reserves.

Beginner’s DJ Course with Lindi Lush

Six weeks. One hour per week
An introduction to the advanced subject of DJing, the Beginner’s Course requires little to no previous knowledge – also helpful for improving beatmatching.
Covering all the basics on “How to be a DJ” the course takes aspiring beat bandits through both turntables and CDs, covering a step-by-step walk-through of the equipment and techniques needed to keep the dance floor rocking.
A one-on-one course, students can learn at their own pace, with access to all of Fabulush’s equipment for the duration of the course except for headphones.
With advice and help on how to run events and how to choose the correct equipment for any budget, the Beginner’s Course helps students to feel confident in their mixing technique and ability to build a set, blending seamlessly from one track to another
